Dr. John Shontz ("Dr. John"), was raised in a suburb on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio known as Mayfield. That's right, the same as Beaver Cleaver! His college education started in electrical engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Knowing that engineering was not for him, Dr. John transferred to The Ohio State University into the College of Agriculture, where he studied Animal Science/Nutrition. He then then gained entrance into the College of Veterinary Medicine receiving his DVM degree in 1978.
Dr. John admits that the best thing to come out of the years he spent in Columbus was meeting Katherine Settle, first a classmate, now a wife. Marrying shortly after graduation, they spent a year working in private practice in the St. Petersburg/Tampa area of Florida.
Moving to Sanford they both entered into business with Katherine's father, Dr. William K. Settle at Sanford Animal Hospital. In 1991, the practice grew to the point that they decided to open another hospital on the west side of town that could also service large animals. That hospital became All Animals Veterinary Hospital, located on Animal Avenue.
Dr. John has a lot of experience with just about every facet of being a veterinarian in private practice and he never shies away from a new challenge. Currently, his main interest and expertise is in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Sports-wise he is a die-hard Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan as well as a season ticket holder of the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes.
